In the United States, emergency medical services (EMS) are regulated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are different variations of EMS vehicles from state to state due to the diverse terrains, weather conditions and population densities. Large American cities have many distinct ambulance services with different colour schemes, sizes and shapes. Most EMS vehicles display the Star of Life (a blue, six-pointed star with the Rod of Asclepius in the centre) so that it is easily recognised by the public.
